- I have always wanted an LCD panel for my Amiga 1200. But all the panels
- I have seen required a PC card which of course could not work in the
- 1200. So I bought a small 9" monochrome VGA monitor from Datalux a few
- years ago. It only weights about 10lbs -- but it is somewhat bulky when
- transported in its box. The good news is it only cost about $150
- (remember this was 3 years ago).
-
- I just received a brochure from Datalux on their new STAND-ALONE color
- active matrix LCD panels. These panels support VGA resolution so they
- *should* work with the 1200 (or any AGA Amiga with an RGB port, or
- flicker fixer). I can't say for certain, because I haven't bought one. I
- know that *some* VGA monitors will not work with the 1200. (In fact,
- I've only found ONE monitor, made by Compaq that did not work. Some
- would work some wouldn't in the same series. They must vary in the
- frequency lower limit that they accept.) These panels almost certainly
- would work with the 3000 as-is or the 2000 with a flicker fixer, since
- they output a more standard VGA signal. The AGA VGA modes have a
- frequency slightly under the 31khz VGA spec. However, they seem to work
- with almost all single frequency VGA-only monitors.
-
- The bad news is that these stand-alone LCD panels are probably VERY
- expensive. I haven't called yet to find out (when I do I will post the
- price). The screen size is 10.4" diagonal, the are color and active
- matrix which would mean they would work fine with animations. It weighs
- 4.8lbs. You can also get a touch screen version. It plugs directly into
- a standard 15-pin VGA port. I would expect these units to cost more than
- $1,000. In fact, I will be surprised if they are under $2,000.
-
- But for those that need them and can afford them, you may want to call
- Datalux at 1-800-328-2589. Their address is: Datalux Corporation, 155
- Aviation Drive, Winchester, Virginia 22602. Fax: 540.662-1682. Phone:
- 540.662.1500.
-
- If these panel do work with the Amiga 1200, it would make the 1200 much
- more portable. I could fit everything into one light weight case.
-
- I have no financial interest in Datalux. As I said above I purchased a
- very small 9" VGA monochrome monitor from them about 3 years ago to use
- with my 1200. It works fine (unfortunately it is not color) and was
- inexpensive. I have never seen anyone offer anything like it. They would
- seem to be a reliable company. They have offered color LCD panels for
- direct view for at least 3 years, but they have always required a
- graphics card that only would work in a PC.
